_ Artist Educator
With current research emphasizing early childhood development, Gateway to the Arts enlisted me as an Artist Educator for educating preschool children. The Artist Residency model consists of collaboration directly with the preschool teacher, formulating lesson plans, working with the children as part of their weekly activities, and allowing the teacher to incorporate the creative movement skills directly into the regular curriculum. By the end of the two month residency, the regular classroom teacher is inspired to utilize the tools herself and lead the children in creative movement.
I have written and presented workshops for teachers of children diagnosed with special needs: Move-Ability, a workshop on inclusion based on the children’s book Giraffes Can’t Dance by Giles Andreae. At the 2009 PACYE Conference I presented a curriculum-based teacher workshop: Teaching the Three R’s. I have presented mini residencies for toddlers called Body Talk with Nursery Rhymes. In the summer of 2010 I presented Leap into Literacy, Moving into Math for early childhood teachers in the Pittsburgh Public Schools. My residencies have focused on a variety of subjects: the rainforest, the ocean, our neighborhood, colors, feelings, animals in the Arctic and transportation, to name a few. I have found creative ways to present the water cycle, the solar system, Greek mythology and African folk tales. There is no subject that cannot be addressed and taught through movement.
